Participating in the Jäynä Competition is easy and fun™: Simply follow these tips for making a proper jäynä and familiarize yourself with the rules of the competition. Team size is 1-8 people. By signing up you agree to follow the official rules of the Jäynä Competition.

Planning 📝
Well planned is half done – Isn’t that what Aristotle said? Same applies with jäynäs since planning is the backbone for the jäynä set. Ideal group size is 1-8 people, and all academic age groups and fields of study are warmly welcome to participate! Anything can serve as the source of inspiration – be it an older jäynä or something unheard of – and the idea in itself doesn’t have to be complicated. However, make sure that the reactions of people being pranked are in a good spirit and entertaining for all parties. Comprehensive and surprising content of the jäynä is best secured by thinking ahead early in the planning stage.
Also, keep in mind that the final presentation format for finalist jäynäs will be video.
Execution 🛠️
Now that you have outlined your masterful jäynä, you’ll get to the fun part - doing the jäynä! When carrying out the jäynä, remember to take into account the general rules of the Jäynä Competition as well as the law and current guidelines in Finland. However, it’s also highly recommended to have fun.
As soon as you have finished your jäynä on someone, it’s polite to reveal to them that it was indeed a jäynä and ask them if they are ok with filming them being pranked in good spirit.
The following things are worth refining before going into the execution part: assigning roles for your group members and choosing the appropriate time and place.
- For example, it’s good to decide a role for each member. Typically, groups have separate filmers and actors.
- The time and place should be thought out well to, for example, avoid having no one around to jäynä.
It’s also good to remember that doing the jäynä represents the student culture in Aalto to many people outside of Otaniemi. Therefore, it’s appreciated to do the jäynä in good faith and with an energetic atmosphere.
Documentation 🎥
Documentation is an integral part of a successful jäynä: presenting the different steps of the process in a clear and entertaining manner draws the attention of the audience to your story during Jäynä Finalé. The documentation can be done in multiple different formats depending on the nature of the jäynä - for example shooting videos, taking photos and recording voice samples provide plenty of opportunities. While recording, it’s important to ask permission from the people being recorded.
Tools for the documentation can be sought out from your own guild, club or acquaintances. Mobile phones with their cameras also provide a viable and easy option for documentation.

Participation 🏆
Once the jäynä has been planned, executed and documented, the only thing left to do is to sign up to the competition and enjoy the ride. The teams are further informed about Jäynä Finalé and acceptance to the finalé, after which the finalists still have a chance to perfect their jäynä presentation. Each finalist team is invited to enjoy the finalé with VIP-seats and servings!

Rules in a nutshell
The winners get the right to represent Otaniemi in the next national jäynä competition. If the winners are not willing to participate in the national jäynä competition, the jury will nominate a team instead. Group size is 1-8 people. At least half of the group have to be members of the AYY. The participants are responsible for themselves and their actions during the competition.
Do’s
- The purpose of the jäynä is to cause lighthearted joy for the prankster, the prankée and the general public
- Jäynä is surprising, innovative and original by nature
- Jäynä can be brief or long
- Jäynä can however be topical and take a stand
Don’ts
- Jäynä does not take a serious stand to religion or politics
- Jäynä does not offend, blaspheme, corrupt, steal or destroy
- Jäynä does not cause anyone any financial, physical or mental discomfort
- Jäynä can not be targeted in any way at police or emergency service departments or members of the jury
Säännöt
I Jäynistä ja jäynäkilpailusta
- 1 § Jäynäkilpailun tarkoituksena on vaalia jäynäperinteitä, edistää teekkarikulttuuria sekä kohottaa teekkarihenkeä.
- 2 § Kilpailussa on tarkoituksena suorittaa mahdollisimman hauskoja, ajankohtaisia, huomiota herättäviä, teekkariperinteitä vaalivia sekä teekkarikulttuuria myönteisessä mielessä esiin tuovia jäyniä.
Jäynän tarkoituksena on tuottaa hyväntahtoisesti riemua itselle, jäynän kohteelle ja suurelle yleisölle. Jäynä ei tosimielellä ota kantaa uskontoon tai politiikkaan. Se on luonteeltaan yllätyksellinen ja tekniikan keinoja hyväksikäyttävä. Jäynä voi olla kestoltaan lyhyt tai pitkä.
Jäynä ei solvaa, rienaa, turmele, varasta tai tuhoa. Jäynä ei aiheuta kenellekään taloudellista, henkistä tai ruumiillista haittaa. Jäynä ei saa kohdistua millään muotoa poliisi- tai pelastusviranomaisiin eikä ylituomariston jäseniin.
II Kilpailusuoritus
- 3 § Kilpailuaikana suoritetut jäynät voivat osallistua käynnissä olevaan kilpailuun, jonka voittajia kutsutaan arvonimellä “Otaniemen teekkarijäynääjä”. Voittajat saavat Otaniemen teekkareiden edustusoikeuden seuraavassa valtakunnallisessa jäynäkilpailussa. Mikäli voittajat eivät ole halukkaita osallistumaan valtakunnalliseen jäynäkilpailuun, ylituomaristo nimeää sinne joukkueen.
- 4 § Kilpailusuoritus koostuu vähintään yhdestä (1) jäynästä.
III Joukkueet ja ylituomaristo
- 5 § Joukkueen koko on vähintään yksi (1) jäynääjä. Joukkueen jäsenistä vähintään puolen tulee olla Aalto-yliopiston ylioppilaskunnan (AYY) jäseniä.
Halutessaan joukkue voi osallistua jäynäkilpailuun nimimerkillä, mutta jäynääjien todellinen henkilöllisyys on ilmoitettava ylituomaristolle.
- 6 § Kilpailuun osallistuvat kaikki jäynäjulistuksessa annettujen ohjeiden mukaisesti ilmoittautuneet joukkueet.
- 7 § Osallistujat vastaavat itse kaikesta toiminnastaan kilpailun aikana.
- 8 § Kilpailun kulkua ohjaa ja valvoo korkea-arvoisa ylituomaristo. Ylituomariston kokoonpanoon kuuluu Jäynäkilpailun ylituomari ja hänen nimeämät ylituomariston jäsenet.
IV Aika ja paikka
- 9 § Jäynäkilpailun päättymisajankohta määritellään jäynäjulistuksessa.
- 10 § Seuraava jäynäkilpailu alkaa välittömästi edellisen päätyttyä.
- 11 § Kilpailualueena on Otaniemen maa-, ilma- ja vesialueet sekä muu tunnettu maailma. Muuallakin suoritetut jäynät voidaan hyväksyä kilpailuun.
V Arvostelu ja tulosten julkistaminen
- 12 § Kilpailun arvostelussa kiinnitetään huomiota erityisesti pykälässä 2 mainittuihin seikkoihin. Joukkueiden tulee kiinnittää erityistä huomiota tekemiensä jäynien todennettavuuteen. Tämä voi tapahtua joko suullisesti, kirjallisesti, monumentaalisesti, visuaalisesti, magneettisesti tai muutoin saattamalla tehdyt jäynät ylituomariston tietoisuuteen arvostelutilaisuudessa.
Kaikki edellä mainitut todisteet tulee saattaa ylituomariston tietoisuuteen viimeistään kahdenkymmenenneljän (24) tunnin kuluessa kilpailuajan päättymisestä. Ylituomariston jäsenen voi myös tarvittaessa pyytää todentamaan jäynän toteutuksen paikan päälle.
- 13 § Ylituomaristo julkistaa kilpailun tulokset jäynäjulistuksessa ilmoitettuna ajankohtana, erikseen ilmoitetussa paikassa.
VI Muita määräyksiä
- 14 § Muilta osin jäynäkilpailun yksityiskohdat määrittelee ylituomaristo jäynäjulistuksessaan.
- 15 § Näiden sääntöjen lisäksi on noudatettava EU:n lainsäädäntöä, Suomen Lakia, kyseessä olevan paikkakunnan järjestyssääntöä sekä hyviä tapoja. Jäynän tapahtuessa Suomen rajojen ulkopuolella on noudatettava kyseisen tapahtumapaikan lakeja ja sääntöjä.
- 16 § Näitä sääntöjä tulkitsee kilpailun ylituomaristo.
