Jäynä and jäynä competition

Jäynä is a good-natured prank or practical joke that is meant to delight both the prankster and the target of the prank. Jäynä is perhaps one of the most well-known parts of the student culture in Otaniemi as it has been an important part of the student culture for many decades. Sometimes people still refer to Teekkarijäynä as the jäynä tradition dates back to technology students in the previous century, but these days Jäynä is a part of the whole Aalto student culture.

There are no specific definitions of a jäynä as it can be various things. One example of a jäynä was recently seen in media all across the globe when students dressed many statues in Finland with masks during the early days of the Corona pandemic. In probably the most well-known jäynä of all time, students dropped a small statue of Paavo Nurmi, a Finnish runner, on the deck of Vasa. Vasa was a Swedish warship that sank in the 17th century and was in the process of being lifted from the bottom of the sea. Next day, when they got the ship over the surface of the sea, the first object on the deck that was found was the miniature statue dropped by the students. This event was broadcasted all over the media and the statue caused a lot of confusion until a few teekkaris called and explained what had happened.
